Published: Friday 23 January 2009 18:51 UTC Last updated: Friday 23 January 2009 18:51 UTC The United States health authorities have paved the way for the first trial of human embryonic stem cell therapy. A California biotechnology company will conduct a clinical trial using stem cells to regrow nerve tissue in patients with damaged spinal cords. The decision by the US Food and Drug Administration, which is not controlled by the White House, comes a day after the inauguration of President Barack Obama. He has been widely expected to lift current restrictions on federal funding and support of human embryonic stem cell research. The use of human embryos is controversial, with critics saying it is unethical. Proponents say it can help develop cures for Parkinson, diabetes and cancer.
